Skulls have been used by many cultures and for many reasons down through the ages. Pirates flew them on their ship flags. A skull is the symbol for poison on containers of chemicals. Many Latin countries remember their ancestors on Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead). The skull represents their dead ancestors. In New Orleans it usually implies Voodoo (with tongue in cheek).
In our rock and roll culture the Grateful Dead used the skull on every album cover in the 1960's - 70's. At the time it was very 'dark and mysterious'. Then metal bands adopted the skull as a symbol of being an outlaw. Now even they seem tame and the skull is sort of a single symbol that replaced the old counterculture chant 'sex and drugs and rock and roll'.
The skull seems to never go away. Someone always to find a new thing for it to stand for. Currently it is a trendy thing to wear in the form of tattoos, clothing and jewelry. So I supply the demand. Some of my skulls have wisps of hair. All of them are missing at least one tooth and have one gold tooth. Some of them are not even white. I made a blue one out of a left over small piece of blue clay and it ended up with a Tulane med student!
Everyone loves skulls!
